    Turkish Natural stone with quality

What makes high-quality natural stone and how you recognize it?

When a house is a newly built or old property is renovated, the new/old home should not only be beautiful but of course, also be durable. If you choose natural stone for the interior design and exterior design, you have already done a lot right in terms of durability and unique appearance. With the large variety, there is something for almost every taste. But how do you recognize quality in natural stone? In this article, we explain which features help you here and which quality differences there can be with natural stone.

Quality features: all optics? Are you serious when you say that!

At first glance, natural building materials such as wood, cork or natural stone differ based on optical characteristics such as coloring, structure or surface treatment. These points are often equated with the high quality of the natural stone. However, this is not enough to assess natural stone quality. Above all, other parameters count for quality differences in natural stone: in addition to the mineral composition, which plays a key role in determining properties such as compressive strength and bulk density, water absorption, weather resistance, and frost resistance also play a role.

The meaning of these points can vary depending on the area of application. To clarify this, we took a closer look at a few myths and prejudices about the quality of natural stone:

The original structure does not mean lower quality!

Generous structures and lively grain – a way to classify natural stone in quality classes? Yes and no. Because these aspects do not mean inferior natural stone quality. Many dealers and online shops offer different sorts. Especially with travertine, some believe the myth that large pores with inclusions and a more pronounced structure such as with travertine rustic, rather stand for a lower quality class. In fact, our brightest sorting of travertine tiles, the travertine light, shows a more homogeneous play of colors, fewer pores, and a higher price. However, this is not related to the quality, but to the selection, which makes this stone appear very uniform and homogeneous, especially when laid. Inside travertine light and medium travertine tiles on the outside represent fine selections that were made with manpower. So whether you choose more or fewer pores and structure is purely a matter of personal taste and the preferred furnishing style.

    Color fluctuations are not bad

Large color fluctuations – poor natural stone quality? That’s not true! The same applies to the stone structure for color fluctuations in natural stone. As a natural product, the rock has “grown” over many years and has been exposed to various environmental and earth influences. As a result, natural stone has fluctuations in color and structure. Depending on the batch and mining area, there may be slight variances.

    Mineral composition and properties

Structure and coloring are closely related to the mineral composition of natural stone. The circumstances of its formation and the geographical location of the mining area shape it. However, it is not said that marble, granite or slate from Europe are of better quality than a comparable stone from Latin America or China. Properties such as compressive strength, resistance, water absorption, and porosity strongly depend on the type of natural stone. Choose natural stones whose quality has been TÜV-tested and whose properties and processing comply with DIN standards.
Just ask the natural stone dealer about it.
Because: hardness (as they naturally offer granite tiles, etc.), good, tested and certified quality is more important for natural stone quality classes.

    Frost resistance: tested!

Central to the quality of natural stone outdoors: How frost-resistant are my patio slabs? After all, nobody wants to experience a nasty surprise after a severe winter. In general, all patio slabs at Beta Stone Experts are tested for their frost resistance by TÜV Rheinland. Note: Limestone slabs naturally have weak zones that are caused by clay deposits in the rock. In isolated cases, small frost breaks can occur here. With proper laying, with a sufficient slope and with laying material suitable for natural stone, this risk can almost be excluded.

Surface treatment: Please uniform and slip-resistant

The respective stone structure specifies a spectrum of surface processing options. Travertine is often either tumbled (which gives the stone a used look), or offered polished, marble or granite tiles mostly polished or polished, and sandstone and slate split. For the quality of the natural stone, even the processing of the surface is central to the appearance and the high-quality overall effect. Slip resistance is also important. Thanks to the respective processing, our natural stones have a non-slip effect, so that tiles can also be installed in wet areas without hesitation and outdoor patio slabs also provide a secure hold when wet.

Stain sensitivity: a question of structure & care

Naturally, water absorption is naturally higher for soft rock such as sandstone than for hard rock such as quartzite or granite slabs. Depending on the quality of the natural stone, however, the rock absorbs less water than a comparable variety. In addition to natural properties and structure, this also depends on correct care.

Natural stone of poor quality tends to stain. If it is also improperly cleaned, it quickly loses its naturally beautiful appearance. Mild or natural stone-based cleaners ensure that you enjoy your natural stone floor for a long time and do not have to worry about stains, discoloration, etc.

Tip: An impregnation that matches the stone provides additional protection. This forms invisible protection so that liquids such as oils, fats and juice roll off the surface and can be easily wiped away.

    Laying compatibility

A particularly important point for some: does a demanding installation speak for poor natural stone quality? Not necessarily. If you choose natural stone, you will get a one-of-a-kind piece that has been created one by one.
Larger tolerances as they e.g. natural split slate or sandstone slabs require a little more craftsmanship or expertise. Tiles must, therefore, be covered with a little more be laid in the middle bed. Depending on the type of installation, outdoor use also requires a little more material and time.
If you don’t want to lay your hands on the stone yourself, you can look for an experienced natural stone businessman.
