Advice for Choosing the Right Marble

Advice for Choosing the Right Marble

    Polished, flamed, rough or sandblasted?

The “marble bathroom” is considered an unaffordable dream for many, but now there are types of marble and natural stone from all parts of the world that are affordable and come in convenient “tile size” for home improvement so that experienced do-it-yourselfers can also dream themselves in the marble line up. However, we want to give our users some important information that can protect them from serious accidents and above all “falls”.

No polished stone on the terrace floor!

Never, think about polished natural stone on terraces that are exposed to the rain or as flooring in bathrooms, where it is always wet! It may shimmer so noble, but the bruises you get when you hit wet, polished marble? They also shimmer first blue, then yellow. Not to mention broken arms and worse. Whether polished marble or granite: when wet they are slingshots! Also note: marble is a relatively soft rock and therefore quite fragile and not frost-proof. Marble can therefore only be used to a very limited extent outdoors. If so, then only in protected locations.

    Non-slip by laser or chemistry?

Once it has happened – someone has been hit on a marble staircase – then every homeowner will think about how to “defuse” the stairs. Specialist companies can make natural stone non-slip by laser treatment – but there is no absolute slip resistance! The chemical method is also well established on the market. The natural stones are treated with certain chemical compounds with hydrofluoric acid – and thereby blunted. But this is absolute specialist work, whereby test pieces are previously treated for unknown types of stone.

    Rough stones in Trend

Rough or split natural stones are on the rise. They are installed in the bathrooms of many new hotel buildings, for example, the Hyatt Hotel. What is rough, what is “split”? There are two terms for one and the same process. Blocks are blasted off in the quarry and broken up into individual disks by mechanical chisel blows. Not every natural stone is suitable for this “harsh” process. In any case, the following applies: rough stone blocks are first-class anti-slip materials.

    Flamed natural stones

Burned natural stones or flamed marble do not mean a “flaming” drawing of the stone, but a special type of surface treatment that makes the natural stone non-slip. The stone slabs are subjected to heat treatment, whereby the top layer flakes off and a slightly uneven, rough structure results. In many private swimming pools, you can find such flamed tiles on the floor, they are also ideal for bathrooms and terraces.

    Crystallize Marble and Natural Stone

Crystallization is a chemical process to make smooth marble non-slip. The method is only suitable for indoor floors. In the case of floors that have already been set, the natural stone is roughened with steel wool after a basic cleaning, an emulsion is applied and then polished to a high gloss. The process is also suitable for working up scratched and unsightly floors.

    Sandblasted Marble?

Flamed natural stones or flamed marble do not mean a “flaming” drawing of the stone, but a special type of surface treatment that makes the natural stone non-slip. The stone plate is a heat treatment behavior, being the top layer from an easy uneven, rough structure results. In many private swimming pools, you can find such flamed plates on the floor, they are also ideal for bathrooms and terraces.
