How to properly Clean stone joints?

it is mostly overlooked, but if it is dirty, the chic overall appearance of the floor suffers the tile joint. What to do if joints become gray and dirty over time and a dirt eraser doesn’t help much? And how do you remove weeds between the terrace joints? We give 5 tips for cleaning joints. Guaranteed helpful, so that joints do not remain unsightly, but become beautiful again!

Tip 1: How to clean joints quickly?

Soiled joints are not only ugly, but they are also unsanitary. Joints should be cleaned regularly, especially in intensively used rooms such as kitchens, bathrooms or entrance areas. So that dirt, bacteria, and mold are quickly a thing of the past, clean the spaces between your tiles with a joint cleaner, available e.g. in hardware stores or online. Put a dash of cleaner on the sponge, apply to the joints and leave for approx. 10-15 minutes. Then wash off with water. In the case of heavier soiling, leave it on for longer and then clean with an old toothbrush to remove the dirt from the joints. Tip: the fine bristles of a used toothbrush are very suitable for cleaning joints. If there are signs of mold, you can use a special mold cleaner. Wear gloves and a face mask when using them, as mold cleaners mostly contain chlorine. Joints between porcelain stoneware tiles can be cleaned quickly, easily and sustainably with a steam cleaner. Take the Kärcher (or another steam cleaner) on hand and use the fine, hot steam to remove dirt and kill bacteria – without any chemicals! Read our tip no. 2 for cleaning natural stone joints.

Tip 2: Easy – Clean natural stone joints with basic cleaner

With a natural stone tile floor or natural stone wall tiles, you should make sure that you use a joint cleaner that is suitable for natural stone tiles. Because many natural stones can lose or fade their fresh shine when acidic cleaning agents get on the stone tiles. The joints of acid-sensitive natural stones can be cleaned very easily and quickly with diluted basic cleaner. To do this, mix, apply and let the natural stone basic cleaner in a ratio of 1: 3 (basic cleaner to water). A stroke of luck: the basic cleaner does almost all the work. The dirt dissolves and you only have to wipe off the dirty liquid with a scrubbing brush. With wall tiles, you can scrub the natural stone joints with a cloth or a joint brush with a suitable degree of bristle hardness – works here without great muscle strength!

Tip 3: Clean the joints successfully with household funds

What Grandma already knew still works today. The household baking powder can help to clean joints. Use a mixture of water and baking soda, apply the mixture to the joints and let it work. Then wipe with water and clean. With stubborn dirt on the joints, however, only the practice test shows how far you can get with the home remedy. Therefore, test the baking powder method first in a small area, otherwise, you may need to use time and lard unnecessarily, only to find that the desired effect is missing.

Tip 4: Clean the silicone joint, or renew

The bad news first: If silicone joints are dirty, they are difficult to clean again. Even a special cleaner only helps to a limited extent here. The silicone joints must be removed and made new. Use a cutter or carpet knife to remove the old silicone from the joint. Remaining residues are completely removed from the joints with a silicone remover. Then new silicone (in the bathroom: sanitary silicone) can be inserted into the tile joints. Thanks to the constant improvement of products, modern silicones are mostly provided with an impregnating agent. Dirt, therefore, accumulates less quickly and the silicone joint stays clean longer.

Tip 5: free Terrace joints of the weeds

Overgrown weeds in the joints are annoying and cleaning them is time-consuming. But it doesn’t have to be an annoying task that you postpone all the time. It works with these two methods: With a high-pressure cleaner, the cleaning of the joints is quick, but you should consider that the joint filling can be washed out with the strong water jet. For natural stone slabs, you should better do without the high-pressure cleaner, as this can roughen the upper stone structure of the natural stone. Here dirt can accumulate more easily over time. The second way to clean the joints is to use a weed joint brush. This is usually equipped with a telescopic arm and can be used upright as a relief for the back. The sparkling clean joints prove the weed joint brush right!
